Guinea Gold alternative 1-200 series rarity
« on: October 06, 2012, 11:49:49 AM »
How scarce are Guinea Golds from the "alternative" 1-200 series shown in the Ogdens Red book and has anyone seen or owned many?
I have recently obtained one and this is the first of this type I have come across.
Guess that noboby can answer this one then?!

Most have not been seen, I think i have 10. They are exceptional rare.

Have been made aware of somebody in South Africa having a few more including the album that has not been seen.

The most common name is that of McKinley No12, had this a few times in base D (mentioned on page 144 of red book item 4.)

In conversation with Mr Murry he stated one found every 10 years or so.

Which one have you found?

Hi again David.Thank you for the reply. The one I have is no.12 Mckinley. It is a Base D1 and also has differant descriptive text to the standard Mckinley card.
Purchased it off Ebay amongst a bulk lot of Base D 1-200 cards.

it seems a very interesting topic, but what are these 'alternatives', that you talk about?

The best known number set is that of the 1-1148. There are variety cards and also the base differences. Probably well over 4000 different cards to collect.

In base "D" there is what we call a de-numbered category, literally called this as the numbers have been blanked out.

Murry has unearthed a leaflet that he has been shown in the red book and referes to an series numbered 1-200. It also refers to an album that has not been seen as yet, the denumbered cards are the cards listed. It is generally thought that this series slightly predates the normal series.

of the 200 only about 50 cards have come to light and many of these are listed as proofs. I use the number loosely as I have 4 cards not listed as seen.

All the 1-50 I have are base "F".

I don't know whether this helps.

Thanks for the answer regarding the card David and the explanation to the forum regarding the alternative 1-200 series.
Will post a photo of the card in gallery later.Anybody please feel free to use this for referance, copying,ETC.
While I am on the subject,do any members of the forum have a comprehensive,up to date listing of all cards in the numbered 1-1148 series?
I am trying to do my best with these using the Ogdens Red book but find it very difficult because of printing errors, poor layout and obvious mistakes.
Thanks in anticipation.

I have just such a list which has been for my benefit and for the eventual publication of my book. It has taken me hours of typing to establish this list. The list is actually for every GG, and I am forever updating the list.

What I would like, and perhaps willing to swop is some assistance in the format, as some areas of my listing defiantly needs improving

Did I tell you that I found a Hettie Morris Base "MM type b 234"
