Baz, very early c1887 , plain back printed by Richardsons, Leeds.
This may well be football and not rugby, you will have a better idea than me.
No known list exists for Baines cards, that's why previously unseen cards pop up now and again.
Colours of the stripes on that card seem to match the 1887-88 season.

Was there a Bury Rugby Football Club?

Bury were founded in 1885, so could be a very early football card. Bury wore stripes too, claret and blue?

Still a nice card though.

That's a lovely card and I would love it to be a Shakers' card, so I could tell you it's football and make you an offer, as you wouldn't want it!
Unfortunately I'm not 100% sure. The 1887 kit was chocolate and blue stripes, which would fit in with the 'border' if not the appearance of the player's kit. Interesting that Roger & Paul have been thinking about this whilst I've been trying to look for a possible player match.  (See attachment of possibly the prize possession in my collection, from slightly later I reckon.)
Bury has never been a rugby town and as such I'm sure has never had a rugby league team, although the neighbouring village of Radcliffe (which now forms part of Bury) did, but not until the early 1900's.  There was certainly a Bury rugby union club in the early 1890's, they now play in red, but famous enough to appear on a card even if they were around earlier?
Go on, I reckon it's football.  What do you want for it?😏😂

Nice card Shaker. Was this produced for the fa cup final? Or is it older than that?

Older, Paul; it's either 1891 or 1892.  Love it to bits.  It's much bigger than normal 'shields', measuring 4 3/4" in diameter or 12cm, if you're a man of the modern era. The favourite, at least in my card collection.  Unfortunately plain back.

It's a W N Sharpe's of Bradford Shield. Nice item. Nothing like this for the Bees though, we were too young! Although only 4 years younger than the Shakers!

Hi Paul,
Can I ask, how you know there are 4 known?  Is there a list of known Baines' cards or something?
Cheers,
Baz.

These are the Brentford FC Baines cards that I know of. I have two (first two), seen three and know of four. :)

Sorry to hijack a Baines shields rugby thread with football! :)

Yeah seller has listed this before, no takers.
Too generic this card for me, player inset cards obviously much more appealing.
Cheers

OK, I fully understand that.

Glad that you picked up the post anyway - I was worried that you would return to this thread after the card has finished and be gutted to have lost out.

Phew!!! :)
