Strange.  Why does someone bid in small increments up to 33 and then suddenly 126?  It wasn't even a snipe.  My knowledge of Baines shields is virtually zero.  I remember reading an article about 15 years ago where someone was saying that the only way to get your hands on any was to pay at least 2x cat price.  I don't know whether that's still valid.

I knew a collector some years ago that would always make a first bid of 100 for any Baines card he didn't have in his collection. Perhaps he's still around.

the cards that command the high prices seem to be certain football clubs,  there are still good cards available for other sports.
just picked this cricket card up for 11.50 and if anything, its a more appealing card than the newcastle card.......

I have a German card from Stollwerck illustrating cricket and have always wondered how the players could get into that position.  That shield made me think the same thing.  How can someone be catching the ball when the batsman is still standing at his crease waiting for the delivery?  (Or is he standing half-way down the pitch?)

I agree with you entirely.
But then ... I'm not a Newcastle Utd. fan ...
