I have seen many items "go" for ridiculous prices.  Then the next day the seller had the same item on offer again.  Obviously bidding in his own auctions.  If the price looks too high to be true then it probably is.  If you are interested in an article, bid what it is worth.  Don't get carried away if the price goes too high.  Just wait and one will eventually turn up for a more reasonable price.

I just remembered a story told to me by a dealer during the early days of Ebay.  Some fairly common set was sold on Ebay for a very high price.  In those days people weren't so aware of sellers pushing prices.  The result was that soon after the auction, he received a flood of orders from people wanting to buy the set at his normal price in the hope of making a good profit on Ebay.  Needless to say, they were all disappointed.

Yes it can be frustrating to see and sometimes entertaining what cards go for. At the end of the day the catalogue (guide) price was just that, but when you ring for the card you wanted they didn't have it, perhaps more popular or rarer than the price reflected.

Perhaps many journeys and pounds of fuel lets you pay that premium price. It is my experience that there was many a card and sets that was considerably under priced and many that were over priced. The catalogue never identified the premium cards but sometimes only quote part sets with premiums excluded. Remember also that at the front of the catalogue it does say that excellent cards may be double etc the quoted price. I have paid £1000 for card catalogued at £1.00 and would do it again finance permitting because I knew only 3 were known.  You must know your market and experienced sellers know when to charge and experienced bidders know what to bid.

I know there are always exceptions but they are exceptions, and I only regret what I didn’t buy not what I have bought.
Regards David
Always looking for interesting cards and associated goods issued by Ogden's you can see samples of cards I am looking for in the wants section.
Best Regards David

another set on ebay today.
whilst browsing looking at brooke bond tea cards, looking a t highest first, a set of '40 years of brooke bond cards', with a starting price of £109.99.
the seller also lists many albums, at the normal values that one expects for to purchase them for on ebay, but he also lists 'a journey downstream', at £19.99.

This is why I always check on current prices for anything I purchase through ebay, some sellers, and buyers come to that have no idea on prices

It's also a matter of some amusement to see how
many sets have the attribution of 'rare' - have seen
this given to Household Hints, Uniforms of the
BEO, even Animals of the Countryside.

1 more reason why 'knowledge' is the most
important 'accessory' for all collectors

That's a question I've often asked at flea markets, but so far I've never found anyone who's THAT "gullible".

i thought that i would make a few enquiries today.
i contacted the seller of the '40 years of brooke bond' cards, in the pretence that other than the three colour schemes, of black, light blue  or dark blue printings, due to his price, was it a new colour variety ?
i mentioned the average price of around £12 for the sets, of the three colour printings.
there are already a few sets of these cards on ebay at the moment.
i received a reply tonight, and was informed that it is the light blue printing.
he has inherited a large collection of brooke bond cards, and done some considerable research ????
he would not consider selling this set lower than £109.
at that price, he will not sell tha set at all
i refrained from asking him if he would be interested in purchasing any sets at around £20, so he could put them all on for his asking price
