They almost look too good to be true .
Very nice corners , lots of colour but what a shame that no back scans .
I'd like to see them in hand before parting with my£'s .

great looking cards.
unfortunately for me.... the one I need from the set is not in that lot.
what a great way for someone to jump into the set though....
being able to pick up 12 at one time is a very cool opportunity.

estimated price of those cards, £10,000 to £12,000 ?
i have a set of these cards in the section i collect of animals kept in circus acts, and the set only cost me a couple of pounds.
the only significant difference, other than being in mint pristine condition, is that at the back, their is a small sentace saying that they are reproduction.
however, on the good side, , my mortgage for my house in london, was payed up before time, around fifteen years ago, and i also own a small cottage near lands end in cornwall, and i also own , in the lake districts, in a cottage in kendall, that i lend out as holiday lets.
each year i go on holiday to picturesque cornwall or the lake district, and i have an inheritance to pass on to my daughters and grandaughters

i may appear a cynic in some of my notes and replys, i put this down, to what i have written before, that in my younger years, being interested in philately, i began to specialise in british and british victorian stamps.
i had quite a magnificant collection, with countless errors , variations etc, only what an advanced philatelist could appreciate.
i found out, much to the annoyance of my father, that i began spending much money on stamps, on such minute differences, that anyone that was not a collectors, would look rather dumb struck, with what to them, seem to be pages of the same stamp, to me, each one different.
there would be paper varieties, perforation varieties, watermark varieties, printing varieties, flaws, errors, postmarks, and the list would go on.
only i, as the collector, would spend a weeks money, on say a watermark variety, that no ordinary person would even see,
i was completely hooked on the hobby, and very much like a recent advert for banking, that the banks, would throw you a hook with a juicy titbit, once hooked, you were caught, and in the net, only waiting for the next fish to come along.
with the destruction of my collection, knowing i would never be able to replace it, or gaining the money back i had spent, after i few years, i vowed never to get into a hobby, that i become blind to the initial fun, of having an innocent collection, to develop into spending all my time ona quest to obtain rarer and rarer items that only i could appreciate.
with the taddy clowns, they may be one of the first cigarette cards, personaly speaking, i do not find it an awe inspiring set, and most images i have seen have been rather tatty looking.
in my own oppinion, a cheap couple of pounds reproduction set, looks just as fine in my collection, it is the theme that i always put the emphasis on, not to whether it is worth several thousand or several pounds, value of my collection, has no significance to me, it is just for the fun and the theme.
i have over two thousand com plete sets, yet i have no idea, nor interest as to its value, i never wish to be in a position again when i start to spend a weeks wages on a single item, .
being a palaeontologist, i have seen many thousands of extinct lifeforms, from microscopic dinoflaggelate cysts, to the largest cetaceans, all gone, never to appear again, but one thing i do share with over 99% of the worlds now lost lifeforms, is that i have the two fundamental and primitive insticts, that is found in all living things, and that is self survival and reproduction.
this is why i prefer my own welfare, and my ofsprings welfare above placing monetry value, in what most working people could not afford, by spending 10,000 to 12,000 pounds on a part set of cards.
it may be alright to think that i am scornful, but to me i think, unless someone has so much money, that it means nothing, that that amount of money could be better spent, if not on ones own welfare, some other worthy cause

fossil -
what you say has some merit.
but, a person could get a reproduction of any card or collectible.
you could get a reproduction of a monet painting if you want for very little money.
but that doesn't make the original monet painting 'not valuable'.
also with regard to your last line....
"it may be alright to think that i am scornful, but to me i think, unless someone has so much money, that it means nothing, that that amount of money could be better spent, if not on ones own welfare, some other worthy cause"
I'd rather think people could and should spend their money as they see fit - as opposed to according to a single person's ideal.
As lachlan said.... to each his own.
just my perspective.

I'm afraid I have to agree with the comments above. Cards appear to hold a different place in every collector's life (as well as their wallets!) so whilst I don't have a problem with a card costing £1000 I do know several collectors that wouldn't entertain saving up to own at least one type from the set - either way I don't mind. I suppose we can take some comfort when cards are still selling for such sums as it suggests our hobby is still going strong
However, I was sorry to read that you lost your stamp collection fossil. I can't imagine what would happen if I lost my collection to a thief or in a fire but I am almost certain it would change my perception of the value of cards. That aspect of your post raised something that I'd be interested in discussing (but for some reason I can't start a new thread?!) - does anyone here have any advice for insuring a collection? Do you bother? Do you just insure a few valuable sets? If anyone wants to start a new thread I'd be interested to see what everyone thinks.

Hi ,
Cedric1812 , I believe we lumped my card collection in with the home insurance , I talked it over with the ' advisor ' and he reassured me that it was ok ....as the wifes collectables were also included .
I think we settled for a £15.000 sum but in my honest opinion I thinkI should have raised the stakes a little .
I haven't that many valuable sets but when you add them all up etc ...
I have quite a few US sets that range in the £2000+ price bracket ....
maybe I'll take another look when the policy comes up again .

Thanks for that Dant Melys. Believe it or not it's my 19th C American cards that I'm worried about too and like you say you may have several thousand relatively cheap cards but they really do add up quickly! Given what you've all said it doesn't look like it'll cost silly money to insure the collection. There are one or two types I'd call out but I think your total sum seems like a sensible way of doing it!
