« on: June 23, 2012, 08:36:13 PM »
just wondering about reproductions. i have seen a couple of sets that i am thinking of purchasing. what i was wondering is are rarer/more expensive sets more likely to be reproductions?

i am not bothered about the sets i am after being reproductions i want them for my pleasure, but being new to this was wondering why some are reproduced and not others?

thanks in advance

Of the reproduction sets I've seen produced, most if not all of them are of rarer or very expensive sets. I think the idea is that few people will ever be able to find or possibly want to spend several £k on the originals. As a result if you often see CWS Parrots, Allen & Ginter Indians and Taddy's Clowns for sale as authorised reproductions.

If you were concerned about whether or not the rarer/expensive cards you see for sale have a higher chance of being reproductions as opposed to originals, then I would say perhaps a very slight chance but probably not - there may be a higher chance of them being forgeries but authorised reproduction sets are usually clearly labelled on the backs. So as long as you know what it is you're looking for and check the backs of the cards as well as the fronts you should be ok.

If you are looking to buy very rare and expensive cards my only advice would be to avoid eBay unless you've seen enough fakes to know a real card when you see it and to stick to reputable dealers at cigarette card fairs/conventions.

Thanks for that, I wasn't worried about fakes. Nor just after expensive cards. Just wondered why some sets and not others.
I am buying from eBay so far until I figure out if there is a local dealer or fairs close by.

Which county are you in? I can give you a list of your nearest CSGB branches if you like. They have small auctions and a few dealers. If you're just getting into it the guys there would be good to talk to for advice. Depending where you are there are plenty of larger card meetings booked all over the UK too.

I've checked this month's card times and although there is a fair in newcastle it's not the one up north! There is however a large event happening on Saturday 20th October between 10am and 4pm at Haughton W.M.C. in Darlington, DL1 2DD. It'll only be a £1 entry fee for non CSGB members and free to members. I gather from the organiser that he already has 8 major dealers signed up and there should be a few more nearer the time!

I don't know any branches up there sadly but at our Yorkshire meetings near Leeds we do get a chap that comes down from Darlington. That's on the first Sunday of every month at Calverley methodist church (in Calverley, just near Shipley). We aren't having any meetings over the summer though. I recommend the branch auctions if you're just getting into the hobby. You know you aren't getting ripped off and you can talk to people about what you are looking for and get advice etc. I only say that because I know when I started I stuck to collectables shops and they can be very expensive! I'm sure though that if you ask any questions about cards or collecting that the guys here will only be too happy to point you in the right direction. I hope it's all going well so far and that you're enjoying it - which is the main thing.

Repros are the way to go if you are thinking about framing a set. Better than risking sunlight damage to a good original set.
